Changes in the curriculum of music theory at the University of Chile

Hi, I'm Javier Sandoval, a music theory student at the University of Chile. I'm also a member of the innovation committee of my career, where we are working on updating and improving the curriculum of our program. In this blog post, I want to share with you some of the changes that we are proposing and why they are important for the future of music education. One of the main changes that we are suggesting is to include popular music in the areas of study of courses such as musical language and keyboard. Currently, these courses are focused mainly on classical music, which is valuable and necessary, but not enough to reflect the diversity and richness of musical expressions in our society. We believe that by incorporating popular music genres such as rock, pop, jazz, folk, and others, we can broaden our musical horizons, develop our creativity and critical thinking, and connect better with our audiences and contexts. Popular music is not only a source of entertainment, but also ...

Time travel to the 70's

Hi, I'm Javier Sandoval and I love music from the 70s. I've always wondered what it would be like to travel back in time and experience the music scene of that decade first-hand. So, I decided to go on a time travel adventure and visit New York City in 1977, the year of the punk rock explosion. I was amazed by the diversity and creativity of the music I heard. I saw bands like the Ramones, Blondie, and Talking Heads perform live at CBGB, the legendary club that launched their careers. I also go to the disco beats at Studio 54, where celebrities like Andy Warhol, Diana Ross, and Mick Jagger usually go . And of course, I witnessed the birth of hip hop in the Bronx, where DJs like Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa spun records and MCs like Kurtis Blow and Sugarhill Gang rapped over them. It was an incredible experience. The music was awesome, the energy was electric, and I felt like I was part of a cultural revolution that changed the world. I learned a lot about the history ...

My Dream Job

My name is Javier Sandoval and I have a passion for music. Ever since I was a child, I loved listening to different genres and styles of music, from classical to rock, from pop to jazz. I always wondered how the composers could create such beautiful and expressive melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. That's why my dream job is to be a musical composer. A musical composer is someone who writes and arranges original music for various purposes, such as films, games, advertisements, or concerts. A composer needs to have a good knowledge of music theory, which is the study of how music works and how it can be manipulated. Music theory helps composers to understand the structure, form, and function of music, as well as the relationships between notes, chords, scales, and modes. Music theory also helps composers to develop their own musical style and creativity. To be a successful composer, one also needs to have some practical skills, such as playing an instrument, using music software, and...

My trip to Chiloé

My name is Javier Sandoval and I want to share with you my great experience of visiting Chiloé, a beautiful archipelago in southern Chile, with my scout group in February 2016. Chiloé is a place full of magic, culture, and nature, where you can enjoy the scenery, the food, and the people. We spent two weeks exploring different islands, such as Quinchao, Lemuy, and Chelín, where we saw the famous wooden churches that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. We also visited the national park of Chiloé, where we hiked through the rainforest and saw penguins, dolphins, and sea lions. We learned about the myths and legends of Chiloé, such as the Caleuche, a ghost ship that roams the seas at night, and the Trauco, a forest spirit that seduces women. One of the highlights of our trip was the curanto, a traditional dish of Chiloé that consists of seafood, meat, potatoes, and vegetables cooked in a hole in the ground covered with leaves. It was delicious and filling, and we ate it with a loc...
