Changes in the curriculum of music theory at the University of Chile
Hi, I'm Javier Sandoval, a music theory student at the University of Chile. I'm also a member of the innovation committee of my career, where we are working on updating and improving the curriculum of our program. In this blog post, I want to share with you some of the changes that we are proposing and why they are important for the future of music education.
One of the main changes that we are suggesting is to include popular music in the areas of study of courses such as musical language and keyboard. Currently, these courses are focused mainly on classical music, which is valuable and necessary, but not enough to reflect the diversity and richness of musical expressions in our society. We believe that by incorporating popular music genres such as rock, pop, jazz, folk, and others, we can broaden our musical horizons, develop our creativity and critical thinking, and connect better with our audiences and contexts.
Popular music is not only a source of entertainment, but also a form of cultural expression, social commentary, and artistic innovation. By studying popular music, we can learn about its history, its influences, its forms, its styles, its techniques, and its meanings. We can also explore how popular music interacts with other arts, such as literature, cinema, theater, and visual arts. And we can also apply our theoretical knowledge and skills to create our own musical compositions and arrangements, using the tools and resources that are available to us today.
We are not proposing to abandon classical music, but to complement it with popular music. We think that both musical traditions have something valuable to offer to us as music students and professionals, and that by studying them together, we can enrich our musical culture and practice. We hope that our proposal will be approved and implemented soon, and that it will benefit not only us, but also the future generations of music students and teachers at the University of Chile.
